Event Photography Perth

Events photography is a type of photography that captures the events and actions of a certain subject, typically people. The events can be a wedding, a concert or any other social gathering where the objectives are to capture the mood and expressions of those involved, as well as key moments in time.

Event photography can be quite rewarding; however, it also has its drawbacks. As event photographers, we are required to capture certain key moments of the event while still creating an appealing presentation that entices our clients.

Events Photographer Tips & Tricks

As with any type of photography, there are certain tips and tricks that can help produce the best events photos.

  • Know your equipment

First and foremost, as events photographers, you must be proficient in your equipment. For example, if we’re doing wedding photography, we know how to change lenses on our camera quickly so we don't miss any special moments. It's also important to be able to change lenses in less than ideal lighting conditions without making mistakes.

The same is true for other types of event photography; you need to know your equipment well enough to produce great results under pressure with little room for error. This includes knowing where the buttons are, changing settings with ease and handling different lens options.

  • Capture the moment, not just the 'posed' version of it

Another important aspect of event photography is to capture the mood and feel of a given situation. For example, we can't expect brides and grooms to smile for every photo during their wedding; they need to be able to enjoy some time apart from each other without worrying about getting a documented picture of it.

So while it's important to get the typical 'posed' shots, make sure you capture the other moments as well. You can do this by trying different angles and looking at other interesting ways to present certain parts of the event. Get creative with your shots!

  • Keep an eye on your surroundings

As an events photographer, you must always keep an eye on your surroundings in order to get the best shots possible. For example, we make sure we don't miss any key moments during a wedding; but it's also vital that we adjust our settings every once in a while.

That's because changes in lighting can mean an adjustment in-camera settings that will allow you to capture certain moments better. Make sure you know your equipment well enough to make the necessary adjustments without skipping on any of the key moments. It's also important that you stay in touch with your surroundings; for example, if you're shooting a wedding, you should know when it's time for an important toast or the bouquet toss.

  • Don't forget about the 'after-party'

Another aspect of event photography is capturing the after-party when people are more relaxed and enjoying themselves. While this might not always be possible when shooting formal events like weddings, make sure you have a strategy for this nonetheless.

For example, we might only be able to plan on taking shots of people as they arrive at the after-party, but we make sure we always have our camera out so we can capture those candid moments as well.

  • Think outside the 'box'

Lastly, as an event photographer, you must think outside the box and look for interesting angles and shots that others might not have spotted. For example, if we’re shooting a wedding, we get a bird's eye view of the ceremony while using a telephoto lens.

This gives an entirely different perspective to the event and captures something that most other people miss. Think outside the box and take advantage of different angles to get an exceptional set of shots.

So that's it! Keep these pointers in mind and make sure you don't miss any of the action, no matter how big or small.
